DescriptionThis table, collected by Canadian missionary Martha Wightman, was used as a divination implement by a local medium. Among the Chokwe and related peoples, divination is a performative act, carried out with a variety of objects created by the ritual specialist himself. Sometimes the form of the divination tool would be revealed in a dream. This one is obviously inspired by European furniture, which was common among local art forms during colonial times.
