DescriptionInscribed "John Kulp / Grimsby / August 19th / 1843", this jar is one of the earliest datable pieces of Ontario pottery. It typifies the Ontario-German tradition with its red earthenware and copper-green glaze with iron-red mottling. An immigrant from Pennsylvania, John Kulp established a pottery at Grimsby in the Niagara region in 1829.
