DescriptionIn the 1960s and 1970s, the Royal Ontario Museum excavated the site of Altun Ha in Belize.  The site is far smaller than the largest Maya cities of Tikal and Calakmul. Yet Altun Ha has the largest amount of jade.  Among the pieces are these flaring ear spools.  The spools were found in an elite burial that contained 22 jade objects in total.  Ear spools were markers of status and made someone fully human - one of the first thing that happened to a prisoner was the removal of his earspools (men were almost exclusively involved in warfare).
